Are you a photographer? Do you have a photography blog for your business?

There are so many options, styles, experience levels, and more when it comes to finding a photographer. With most people using the internet (specifically Google and Social Media), that is where they are going to find their information. Providing your audience with a blog is the best way to show them information about your photography business and why you’re the best fit for them.

The benefits of blogging as a photographer:

1. It helps drive traffic to your website.

Raise your hand if you want more website visitors 🙋‍♀️ Me too!

Creating an optimized blog (yes, that means some SEO work) is beneficial for increasing your view-ability (is that a word?) on Google and other search engines. Here is how it works [in a nutshell]:

You have a website with a few pages, but let’s be honest- those pages don’t get updated too frequently. This tells Google “Hey, this website exists but not a whole lot of new info is being updated so it’s not as important as others.”

Blogging fixes that. Blogging creates more pages on your website (the more pages indexed, the more pages Google has a chance to find- yay!). Having a photography blog also shows Google that your website is frequently being updated and that must mean there is something important on there to show. This then boosts your ranking on the search engine platform. *There is a lot more that goes into than this but it gives you a general idea*

After some work on your photography blog, ta-da! You have increased your organic website traffic.

2. Photography blog posts = content anchors

Creating and managing a photography blog is a great way to create content anchors. Content anchors are the deep, rich, steady pieces of content you create that gives you the opportunity to repurpose more content. Each blog post you create *should* allow you to create 5+ social media posts, 3+ stories (aka something to talk about), and a newsletter. For example, what I just told you I could create at least 2 posts on (what a content anchor is and how many social media posts you should expect out of one blog), talk to you about on stories, and send a newsletter about- and that is just a couple of sentences of this whole blog.

3. Convert 😎

Our favorite word as business owners. Converting your leads to clients is our drive for most of our work in our business.

So how do we do that exactly?

Here’s how the process works:

    • Visitor comes to your website

    • Visitor sees a free offer through a call to action on your website

    • Visitor clicks the call to action which takes them to a landing page with a form to complete

    • Visitor fills out the form and receives their free offer

Scroll to the bottom of this blog and you’ll see our offer for our Content Anchor Freebie call to action (and hey, sign up for it while you’re there because it’s a GOOD one)

99.9% of your blogs should have a call to action because you don’t ever want your visitor’s click loop to end!

4. Long term results from your blog

Think about this…

You need to hire someone to take the most precious family memories for you. You’ve been saving up for a session and you want it to be with a safe, experienced photographer who suits your style. You use Google to find a few photographers in your area who came up on a search for “family photographers near me” and now you have a handful of website to look at, great! As you look at them, you notice some websites have loads of content, freebies, and expertise while others have their prices and a contact form. Which one do you feel will do a better job? You only want to pay and dress up your family once this year.

I think we all know the answer is option A, the expert in the area with the photography blog and freebies. That’s an easy choice. And this is what your visitors will see as a long term result of blogging. Your expertise will grow, your content will grow, and it will all be there on your website to prove it.

Not only will you get the lead over other websites, you will also immediately build trust with a prospective client as they can see how you are the expert in your industry.

5. Link building

Interesting fact: link building is the 3rd most crucial factor in SEO, and also the most challenging part.

Link building is a way to network your business with others. Of course this is a two way street. You can highlight other businesses through your blogs, and they can highlight your business through theirs!

When you create photography blog articles, consider link to other trusted business within your network. For example, do you use a hair and make up artist for your clients? Create a blog post that links to their services, and have them do the same in return for you.

Linking businesses this way again shows that you are the expert of your business- Yes, even my linking other businesses. When you know that your business wouldn’t thrive without others (such as hair and make up artist, prop companies, your favorite lunch spot nearby that your clients can visit after their session, etc) it builds trust with your clients.

Another benefit of backlinks is that they help you build your domain authority, which helps improve your overall discoverability in search engines.

Don’t be afraid to give those network building businesses a shoutout!

6. Share your news

Another benefit of blogging is the ability to share news about your photography business!

Did you hire a new assitsant? Blog about it.

Are you gearing up for fall and holiday sessions? Tell the world through your blog.

Want to showcase a family that you have done multiple photoshoots for over the years? Tell your story about them and show us how they’ve changed on your photography blog.

Photographing an event? Drum up some visitors with a blog post!

I think you get the idea 😉

Don’t let blogging intimidate you, start small and consistent! Soon enough you’ll have a bank of knowledge, news, and content on your website to attract leads and clients.
